Operations

Critical Control Rooms are an essential component of an organisation’s or industry’s operation. In some sense, Critical Control Rooms are the actual heart beat of an enterprise and they have to function 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. During this process humans and machines combine to provide an operational function(s) that benefits a broad range of stakeholders.

The functions and services that are provided by a Critical Control Room have a direct impact on service availability, production output, quality, and safety of industrial plants. They can also have a direct impact on the safety and welfare of people working in that enterprise or of people using their services, for example in public safety.

Technology is rapidly advancing and Critical Control Room operators and managers need to understand how these advances could help to improve the efficiency and safety of their operations. Unfortunately there is no single solution that will fit the operational environment of every industry or sector. However, there are a number of common operational challenges that cut across these environments therefore the ability to share information and lessons learned becomes even more important.

The focus of the Operations core theme is to help members understand their operations in more detail and to identify potential solutions to increase the operational value of their Critical Control Room function. This aim is achieved by focusing on topics such as:

  • Analysing operational environments and requirements;

  • Developing a Concept of Operations that aligns with the industry or enterprise;

  • Understanding normal operational function and the ability to mitigate against extreme events through well-developed business continuity arrangements;

  • Indentifying enabling technologies, informatics and analytics which support cross-sector operations and unique industry requirements such as spatially enabled data;

  • Identifying strategic operational challenges;

  • Understanding the risk of managing crowded places and mass casualty events;

  • Culture and organisational change management;

  • Enhancing policy and decision making;

  • Case studies;

  • Business continuity planning;

  • Identifying how big data, data analytics, artificial intelligence and visualisation can support operations; and

  • Anticipating future trends and operational requirements.

This list is not exhaustive and the topics of interest and conversations are driven by members themselves. We strongly recommend that you contribute your ideas for other topics, areas of interest, discussions, events, case studies, or other activities that help us to share thinking and practice.
